You’ve worked hard to create a unique business venture, so doesn’t it make sense that what you’ve created should remain yours?
Sadly, if you treat intellectual property protection as an optional advantage, all the painstaking effort you’ve put into creating a novel business venture could amount to nothing. Without IP protection, anyone could effectively put their name on your venture and eat into your direct market. Aside from ensuring that your venture is yours and yours alone, protecting your business IP enables you to:
Exploit your assets by granting you sole ownership of your idea IP is as much a tool for eliminating the competition as it is for encouraging varied yet creative solutions. Learning to use it to your advantage may grant you that much sought after competitive edge. Licence your ideas If you can’t afford to develop all your great ideas, ensure that you have registered them to your company. You are entitled to licence them to someone else and still profit from your creative genius. Prevent a sticky mess Someone, somewhere, may have thought of your exact idea, and sadly, they may have done so before you. You could end up forking out money to your competition to pay for stepping on their toes!
Speaking of sticky messes… Proper IP protection matters to any business of any size… even mega brands. We credit Facebook with bringing us social networking as we know it, right? Well, Yahoo! would disagree, having recently filed an intellectual property lawsuit against Facebook claiming that Facebook's entire social network model is based on Yahoo's patented social networking technology.
On the other hand… IP protection from the outset can be an effective strategy for success. Forward-thinking company AOL, for example, recently agreed to sell more than 800 patents and related products to Microsoft for $1.06 billion. Bottom Line: Any business needs to protect its valuable assets if it is to grow its… well, bottom line.

Nice article, telling me everythin i already know Did not help or point me in the right direction. I need advice on HOW to actually protect my business. All small business's know what we should do. But we need to know how to do it cost effectively. Copyright and patents are fine, but only if you have the money to protect them. If Sony, Mcdonald etc break your copyright, have we got 300k 600k to take them to court. This advert seems more abour a company that wants to make money from us rather than help us
